Artifact

"An Artifact: Is any man-made object, created especially with a view to subsequent use."

Once the use is fulfilled or a specific generation of users are done using it either they expire,
or have created a new improved version of the object.
We have an artifact, as a source for further developments, improvements, or as a fundamental structure.

Design is a field working very closely with the concept or existence of artifact,
it may be a conscious or an unconscious effort of a Designer.
Designers are required to fulfill the need of a group, society, nation or galaxy (if you please), 

improve the existing or/& innovate the new. 

Designers have to have one of the above attributes to be a Designer,
otherwise you are one of the nobody.
